Tolls: Cars rented in Switzerland come with a visible sticker, which is called a ‘vignette’. This gains all drivers access to the Switzerland motorways, so we advise you to check your hire car to avoid the applicable fine. It is worth travelling in your hire car on the motorways to save both time and money. The road numbers are shown on the green signs for the toll motorways.
Driving Information: The minimum age of a driver is 18 years. Plan your trip in Switzerland carefully to make sure you take the motorway routes when you can to minimise the journey times. Whilst the mountain routes are beautiful, they are extremely difficult to drive along at any pace and make good time. Some of these mountain routes are one way which is indicated by a white rectangle placed below a blue rectangle/ yellow horn sign. Equally some mountain roads in Switzerland will only allow one-way traffic during certain hours, but drivers will be advised by signs as to the times.
Fuel: Petrol stations along the motorways are usually open from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm or midnight, although some are open all day and all night. Along other roads petrol stations are open from 6, 7 or 8 am until 6 or 8pm. Many stations do not accept major charge cards such as Visa or American Express, so before you embark on a journey in your hire car make sure that you have some cash with you.
Parking: Do not park your hire car where you see signs saying Stationierungsverbot or Interdiction de Stationner. Many towns have Blue Zones that restrict parking during the period between 8am and 7pm on weekdays; however you can obtain a disc free of charge from ACS or TCS motoring club offices to allow you to park your hire car. To get in to the towns of Rigi, Murren, Braunwald, Wengen and Zermatt it is recommended that you park your hire car at the station and then travel in, or alternatively get to them by public transport.
