Brindisi Car Hire

The port of Brindisi lies at the head of a wide inlet on the east coast of Apulia near the Adriatric, some 55km (34 miles) in your hire car north east of Taranto or 100km (62 miles) in your hire car south east of Bari. Brindisi, capital of the province of the same name and seat of an archbishop, has been since ancient times an important centre of trade with the Eastern Mediterranean.
The sheltered inner harbour of Brindisi consists of two arms as you will find on a visit in your hire car. To the west the Seno di Ponente, 600 meters (198ft) long, with extensive quays and a bathing beach which is worth a stop off in hire car. To the east the Seno di Levante, 450 meters (1485 meters) long, in which very large vesels can birth. A channel connects both arms with the Outer Harbour of Brindisi, the entrance of which is divided into two by the islet of Sant’Andrea, with a 15th century fort.
The life of Brindisi’s centre on the Piazza del Popolo which you can visit in your hire car. A little way south stands the church of Santa Lucia, with a Byzantine crypt and catacombs, which is equally worth a visit in your hire car while in Brindisi.
From the Piazza del Popolo in your hire car, the Via Garibaldi runs north east to the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, which overlooks the Seno di Levante. On the right is the Marine Station with a ferry serviced to Greece.
The Vale Regina Margherita, to the left leads to a marble column which you can see from your hire car and stands 19 meters (63ft) high, marking the end of the Via Appia, constructed from 312 BC onwards. The ‘Queen of Roads’, ran from Rome via Taranto to Brindisi. Only the lower half of a second column still stands, the rest being destroyed in 1528.
A little way south west of the column in your hire car is the Brindisi cathedral, with a 12th century mosaic pavement which was remodelled in Baroque style.
Adjoining the Brindisi cathedral is the Archaeological Museum, which you can visit in your hire car and see the medieval sculpture, Roman portrait statues, and more there.
Also near the Brindisi cathedral are the 14th century Palazetto Balsamo, with a richly decorated balcony and the former baptistery of San Giovanni Sepolcro, also worth a visit in your hire car while in Brindisi.
Farther south west in your hire car is the Norman church of San Benedetto, with a Romanesque side doorway and a cloister full of fine relief carving.
About 500 meters west of the Brindisi cathedral in your hire car, above the western harbour gate, is the Castello Svevo which was built by Fredrick II in 1227, with massive round towers added in about the 15th century. The Castello is not open to the public, however it is still worth visiting, even if only to drive past and take in the sights from your hire car while in Brindisi.
If you wish to leave your hire car behind there are boat trips from Viale Regina Margherita across the Seno di Ponento to the Monumento al Marinaio d’Italia, a naval war memorial in the form of a ship’s rudder, with fine view over Brindisi from the top.
About 3km (2 miles) in your hire car north west of Brindisi if the former convent church of Santa Maria del Casale, with a beautiful doorway and geometric patterns in multi-coloured stone on the façade, whilst inside there are some fine Byzantine frescoes.
