Milan Car Hire

Centre of fashion, business and finance, Milan has bustling, businesslike feel about it, as you will find on a visit in your hire car.
Milan is smart rather than attractive; a city of wealth as opposed to imagination and the heartland of the Italian economy.
To the Goths, who took Milan over from the Romans, Milan was called ‘Mailand’, the land of May, a place of warmth and inspiration.
Milan has long been an important trading centre at the junction of transalpine routes, and a prize for powerful dynasties. Today, Milan is the best place to see Italy at its most cosmopolitan and stylish, as you will find on a visit in your hire car.
Some of the best places to see in your hire car while in Milan are set out below:
On the Piazza Castello in your hire car you will find the Castello Sforzesco. The first castle on this site was built by the Visconti family, but demolished when their reign ended in the mid 15th century. Milan’s new ruler, Francesco Sforza, built in its place the Renaissance palace which you can see your hire car today. The palace now contains, together with sections on Applied Arts, Archaeology and Coins, the Civiche Raccolte d’Arte Antica, a fine collection of furniture, antiquities and paintings which is worth a visit in your hire car while in Milan.
Also worth a visit in your hire car is the Musei Poldi-Pezzoli, which your will find on Via Aessandro Manzoni in your hire car. Giacomo Poldi-Pezzoli was a wealthy nobleman who, on his death in 1879, bequeathed his magnificent art collection to the state. Its most famous painting is the 15th century Renaissance Portrait of a Young Woman by Antonio Pollaiuolo.
The next place to visit in your hire car in Milan Teatro alla Scala, which you will find on Piazza della Scala in your hire car in the centre of Milan. This Neo-Classical theatre, known as La Scala, opened in 1778 and is one of the most prestigious opera houses in the world.
Just south of La Scala in your hire car is Duomo on Piazza del Duomo. Situated at the very heart of Milan this giant cathedral is on of the largest Gothic churches in the world. It was begun in the 14th century, but not completed until more than 500 years later. The building’s most startling feature is the extraordinary roof, with its 135 spires and innumerable statues and gargoyles, and from which there are far reaching views across Milan to the Alps.
In addition to the great monuments you can visit in your hire car in Milan, there is a host of varied and interesting museums, churches and civic buildings which provide an enthralling mix of old and new.
The Galleria Vittorio Emanuel II is one of these, which you will find on Piazza del Duomo in your hire car. This ornate shopping archade, known as il Saloto de Milano (Milan’s drawing room), was designed by the architect Giuseppe Mengoni in 1865. Tourists are attracted to the stylish shops, cafes and restaurants here, which are said to serve the finest coffee in Milan.
The galleria itself has a floor plan in the shape of a Latin cross, with an octagonal centre adored with mosaics representing four continents, art, agriculture, science and industry. Its finest feature is its metal and glass roof, crowned with a magnificent central dome.
The Museo del Duomo, which you will find in the Palazzo Reale in your hire car, was for centuries home to the Visconti and other rulers of Milan. It charts the history of the Duomo frm its 14th century origins, until the 1886 competition held to redesign its façade.
The Civico Museo d’Arte Contmporanea, which you will also find in the Palazzo Reale in your hire car, is refreshingly up to date and contains pieces from the 19th century through to pieces by members of the Futuristic movement.
The recently renovated Pinacoteca Ambrosia, which you will find on Piazza Pio XI in your hire car towards the centre of Milan, is home to the magnificent library of Cardinal Federico Borromeo, whose 30,000 manuscripts includes a 5th century illustrated Iliad and an early edition of Dante’s Divine Comedy from 1353.
Finally the San Satrio, which you will find on Via Torino is an unassuming church and is one of the most beautiful Renaissance buildings in Milan.
Some of Milan’s finest treasures are to be found in its religious buildings, which you can also visit in your hire car while in Milan, three of these are the Sant’Ambrogio, which you will find on Piazza Sant’Ambrogio in your hire car; the San Lorenzo Maggiore, which you will find on Corso di Porta Ticinese in your hire car. This church contains the most important collection of Roman and early Chritiain remains in Milan. Finally the Santa Maria della Grazir, which you will find on Piazza Santa Maria della Grazie in your hire car. This beautiful 15th century Renaissance convent contains one of the key images of western civilization; the Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci.
