Turin Car HireMention Turin and most people will think of industry and prosperity. Turin is certainly an economic powerhouse but Turin is also a town of grace and charm, with superb Baroque architecture and excellent museums which you can visit in your hire car while in Turin, all set against the dramatic scenery of the foothills of the Alps. Turin is also, of course, home of the famous Turin Shroud, the Fiat car company, and the Juventus football team. Though settled by the Romans and the seat of a university since the Middle Ages, Turin came in to its own only after 1563, when Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy moved his capital to Turin. Three centuries of steady prosperity ensued. Turin then became the powerful base for Italy’s unification movement, and from 1861 to 1865 Turin became the capital of the newly united country. Subsequently Turin’s main power was economic. The car company Fiat was established in Turin in 1899 and grew to be one of the biggest firms in Europe. After World War II, Turin attracted thousands of poor Italians from the South who came to work in Turin’s factories. Though there have been social conflicts and labour disputes as a result, managers and workers do unite over football: the Juventus team is owned by the much revered Fiat boss, Gianni Agnelli. You will find Turin’s Duomo on Piazza San Giovanni in your hire car. The cathedral, built in 1497-8 and dedicated to St John the Baptist, is the only example of Renaissance architecture in Turin. The sober square bell tower stands in contrast to Turin’s sumptuous Baroque buildings, as you can see from the outside in your hire car. The Turin Shroud is housed in the Capella della Sacra Sindone in the grounds of the Duomo which really should be visited while in Turing in your hire car. The Turin Shroud is perhaps the most famous holy relic. Until 1988 it was believed that the Turin Shroud was the winding-sheet in which the body of Christ was wrapped after his crucifixion. However carbon-dating tests of the Turin Shroud showed that it dates back no further that the 12th century. Next drive your hire car to the Piazza Castello, which is Turin’s main square, to see the Palazzo Madama. Turin’s main square once contained a medieval castle which incorporated elements of Turin’s Roman city walls. The castle was later enlarged with a new façade added in the 18th century. The Palazzo Madama, as it was subsequently renamed, now sits in the centre of Turin’s main square with a stately balustrade façade. The first floor of Turin’s Palazzo Madama is home to the Museo Civico d’Arte Antica which contains an extensive collection of treasures ranging in date from the Graeco-Roman era to the 19th century, which you can explore on a visit to the museum in your hire car. The city of Turin is blessed with other numerous interesting museums, which are housed in splendid palazzi and civic buildings that you can visit in your hire car while in Turin. These include the Museo Egizio, which you will find on Via Accademia della Scienze in your hire car, and contains on of the most important Egyptian collections in the world. The Galleria Sabauda, which you will also find on Via Accademia della Scienze in your hire car, is home to the House of Savoy’s main painting collection. The Museo Nazionale del Risorgimento, which is housed in the Palazzo Carignano in Turin and through paintings and a collection of artefacts tells the story of unification, which you can see on a visit in your hire car. Other places of interest that you can visit in your hire car while in Turin include Via Roma, which is Turin’s main street running through the heart of the historic centre of Turin. You can follow the Via Roma in your hire car as it leads from Piazza Castello at the northern end down through Piazza San Carlo to the distinctive arched façade of Stazine Porta Nuova Turin, which forms a focal point at the southern end, as you will see in your hire car while exploring Turin. The Piazza San Carlo is a square halfway along the Via Roma in Turin, which you can also visit in your hire car, and comprises an ensemble of Baroque architecture so sophisticated as to earn it the nickname of ‘Turin’s drawing room’. The Galleria San Frederico, a stylish shopping centre, can be found at the north western corner of the square in your hire car. You will find the Parco de Valentino on the Corso Massimo D’Azeglio in Turin in your hire car. This park beside the river contains the Borgo Medioevale, a complex of buildings resembling a medieval village and castle, which was built for an exhibition in the late 1880s. The Orto Botanico is also located in the Parco del Valentino in Turin, beside the medieval complex, and is an impressive botanical garden in a pleasant setting, which you can also visit in your hire car.
