First licensed in the 1930's London Gatwick is the busiest single runway airport in the world and the second busiest airport in the United Kingdom, handling over 31 million passengers a year, flying to around 200 destinations with 70 different airlines. Its development strategy for the future focuses on the airport's expansion as a single runway, two terminal airport, as it grows to handle around 40 million passengers a year, within the next ten years.
How to get to London Gatwick Airport
London Gatwick is closer than you think.
London Gatwick Airport is situated equally 45kms (28 miles) south of London and north of Brighton, directly linked to the M23 motorway at junction 9 and to the A23 London-Brighton road. Just a 10 minutes drive away, the M25, London orbital motorway, further connects London Gatwick with the United Kingdoms extensive road and motorway network.
24 hour petrol stations are offered at both London Gatwick's North and South Terminals.
Shopping at London Gatwick Airport
Shopping at London Gatwick is also an experience. Within the International Departure lounges of the North and South Terminals there are branches of household names such as Accessorize, The Body Shop, Books Etc, Boots Health & Beauty, Glorious Britain, Clair's Accessories, Cotton Traders, Clarks, Corals, The Gadget Store, Flightline International Ltd, Hargreaves Sports, La Senza, Knickerbox, Monsoon, Past Times, Pilot, Post Office, Nine West, Rolling Luggage, Salisbury's, Sock Shop, Sportsentail, Sunglass Hut, The Link, TopShop, Tie Rack, Unique Crafts, UK Explorer, Virgin, Walk-In Back Rub, Warner Bros, Watch Station, Whistlestop Food and Wine and WHSmiths.
Most shops are open between 6am and 9.30pm.
After airport security control there is a large selection of duty and tax free stores available for all passengers, offering a saving of up to 17.5%. The benefits of the Shopping Collection Service is also available for travellers to a destination within European Union. Buy what you want, yes even those fragile or larger items and then collect your purchases from the designated area upon return to the UK, saving the hassle of carrying then around with you while you are away. Please note however, if you final destination is outside the EU, you may be requested to pay tax on purchases on arrival at your destination and/or if you bring them back when returning to the UK. Newsagents, bookstores, pharmacies and certain other products are excluded.
